अ मोमेंट विथ प्रशांत
Today, with the encouragement of his seniors and fellow constables, he is one of the 11 finalists of Indian Idol. Now, this soft-spoken policeman dreams of becoming a playback singer.
A singing policeman on the stage of Indian Idol. How did this happen?
I am a police constable. I joined Kolkata police force in 2002 and was in the special action force till 2006. At the end of 2006, an orchestra was formed within the department and I got a chance to perform in it. I gained a lot of confidence facing the audience there.
I never really watch Indian Idol, I never had the time. My seniors and colleagues encouraged me to participate and it is because of them that I am here today.
Despite being in special action force, did you secretly dream of becoming a singer?
Yes, I did dream of becoming a singer, but never thought it was possible. My father was in police and so my family expected me to become a policeman, too. But now I have the support of my colleagues.
Are you married? Or do you have a girlfriend?
No, I am not married. And I don’t have a girlfriend yet.
How do you rate your chances of winning the title?
Every contestant here is talented, some of them much more than me. I can win only if I perform really well. I want to request the janta to vote for the best singers. True talent should come up. India needs good singers and the deserving one should get the votes.
I don’t want to leave my friends behind just to climb the ladder. They’re like my family now. It makes me sad when anyone is eliminated.
Will you give up your job if you win the title?
If I win the title, I will do is talk to my seniors in the force and consult them about what to do. I’ve to get their permission. Of course, I dream of becoming a playback singer, but at the moment there are tough decisions to be taken.
I cannot leave the police force. It is because of them that I am here today. We’ll just have to see what happens later.
Which music directors do you dream of working with?
My favourite music directors are Jatin Lalit. If I win, and get a chance to sing for them, it will be a dream come true.
Who is your favourite judge and why?
Anu Maliik. He is very straight forward and says what is right, on your face. I don’t feel bad about it—it is important that we know our flaws at this stage.
Why are the performances a little low key in the Galas?
Yes, I agree the performances are not up to the mark. I guess we all are very tense and under pressure. Performances will definitely be better this week. I am trying hard to improve my performance.
You looked good in your suit. Are you concentrating on grooming yourself?
If we look good, we will become popular and thus get more votes. That is the only reason for my interest in designer clothes. Now that we have designers working for us, I would definitely like to take advantage of the opportunity.
Any message for your fans?
I am the first Nepali to be on this stage. I am sure my achievement is a matter of pride for the whole Nepali community across the world.

Prashant's Craze...
Sikkim and Darjeeling in integrated support for PrashantGangtok, Jun 16: From signature campaigning to planting tree saplings, processions to pamphlet campaigning and picketing mobile service providers to warning power suppliers, Sikkim and Darjeeling regions are being emotionally integrated on an unprecedented scale, all because of a 24-year-old singer.
Public support for Prashant Tamang, an Indian Idol contestant, has transcended the Rangpo river, the great physical divide between Sikkim and Darjeeling and is increasing with each passing day since the knock-out round of the contest began on May 4.
Prashant, who hails from Tungsung village in Darjeeling is presently in a music band of the Kolkata Police. Schools, clubs and even the police were asking people to support Prashant now named as 'Pahar ka Gaurav' (Pride of the Hills).
This title bestowed upon Prashant by the masses somewhat sums up the emotions of the people of both regions.
''We request all to vote for Prashant, who is the pride of the hills. Supporting a talent like him promotes emotional integration between the people of Sikkim and Darjeeling,'' said Chetan Sapkota, a social worker in Singtam.
Sikkim Cabinet Minister G M Gurung and S B Subedi planted tree saplings today at Singtam as a novel way to pledge the Sikkimese people's support to Prashant.
The mass hysteria for Prashant in Sikkim and Darjeeling had now doubled with the icon being selected for the final round of the Indian Idol contest. With this achievement, people from both the regions have taken the responsibility upon themselves to promote him as the Indian Idol by voting enmasse through SMS.
Posters and banners hang on every nook and corner of Darjeeling district and major towns of Sikkim, including Gangtok, giving a festive look to the region.
Loudspeakers boomed constantly reminding people to vote for Prashant and taxis from both the regions were carrying photographs of the smiling singer.
Campaigning is on every day by different social associations from Sikkim with participation of people from different sections of the society.
A rally was taken out at Singtam, east Sikkim, yesterday morning by the representatives of different associations.
A signature campaign that started from Darjeeling reached Gangtok today after stamping public emotions along the way. The huge banner was soon scribbled with a thousand signatures from Gangtok. DARJEELING: A Reliance outlet was damaged and its hoardings and kiosks burnt on Saturday, following widespread protests against cellular service providers by the people of the hill town. They were upset when they found that their SMSes in favour of Indian Idol contestant Prashant Tamang had not been delivered. Young men and women took out a rally in the morning, protesting the inefficiency of cellular service providers to deliver SMSs, supporting Prashant. Although all cellular service providers were blamed for the fiasco, Reliance had to bear the brunt of it as it has the largest number of customers in the hills. For nearly four hours, rioters went on the rampage, targeting retail outlets dealing with Reliance service and vouchers with police failing to pacify angry rioters. Just a few days ago, people complained that their SMSes wee not reaching the destinations and also warned of protests if services were not restored. Saturday’s agitation and rioting were also due to the fact that rumours were afloat that the internet had declared Prashant not selected for the next round. Posters were also put up at Chowk Bazaar, condemning the Reliance service provider. Protesters even forced shops to down shutters and stopped all movement of vehicles. People gheraoed the Darjeeling Sadar police station demanding immediate action against the cellular service providers. "It is a clear case of sabotage to eliminate Prashant in the next round. If Prashant is not selected, then we will not only boycott Reliance but also force them out of Darjeeling," said Pranay Rai, Darjeeling MLA. "These cellular service providers deduct money from our balance but do not deliver SMSes," said Puran Thami, vice-president of the All Gorkha Students’ Union (AGSU). Darjeeling police station inspector-in-charge N T Sherpa said people have complained that SMSes, sent on Friday, had been jammed. Only some SMSes had reached their destinations and that, too, in the early hours of Saturday. "People are venting their anger mostly on the Reliance service provider as it is used mostly in the hill town. Things got further aggravated due to the fact that Prashant was placed in the last four and just managed to scrape through sowing apprehension in the minds of people," said Sherpa. But the IC claimed that the situation wa sunder control and that he had spoken to the marketing DGM of Reliance in Siliguri on this issue. "I have spoken with one Rajesh Dassani, DGM of Reliance in Siliguri. He said 90% of the SMSes have been registered on time and the full figure would be provided later in the evening," Sherpa added. Police forces have been deployed in large numbers in the town as well as at the BSNL office building, apprehending further trouble. Complaints have also been made against the BSNL service provider. "We can assure people of 100% SMS registration through our service provider. We have deducted money for the SMSes that have been sent but that has been done only after registration," said V Bhattacharya, SDO of the BSNL office. The rioting in Darjeeling had a domino effect on the other two subdivisions of Kalimpong and Kurseong. There, too, shops were closed and people gheraoed the offices of Reliance and other cellular service providers.
Prashant Tamang, a constable with Calcutta Police and a resident of Toongsoong here, got through the voting round of the national talent hunt today though all the residents of the town could not vote for him.
After beating around 25,000 contenders from across the country, Tamang now has to defeat 17 opponents before he can become the next Idol. At this stage, Tamang’s hopes are pinned on his popularity, that is, the number of votes he gets through text messages on cellphones and calls from land phones. The facility for the last round was open from 9 pm on June 1 to 9 am the next day.
“While we could not send text messages through Aircel, Reliance agents here did not have enough refill vouchers in the town. If people turn ‘sentimental’ in the event of Prashant losing at the competition, the operators will themselves have to face the consequences,” Tenzing Khambachay, the Darjeeling municipality ward commissioner, had said before the voting results were announced today. Khambachay is heading an informal committee, formed to urge residents to vote for Tamang.
The residents have even accused Reliance and Aircel of “conspiring” against them and alleged that “their act almost snuffed out the hill’s Indian Idol hope”.
“We hope they will co-operate with us in the next voting rounds,” Khambachay said.
A representative of one of the accused cellphone service providers, however, said the problem was over and the vouchers would now be available. “Our vouchers had run out of stock from a few areas, but we have replenished them. It will not be a problem anymore,” said a Reliance executive from Siliguri.
Despite the hitch in the cellphone services, Tamang sailed through the voting round this time, the result of which was declared tonight. The constable became one of the last 18 contestants at the camp.
For the next rounds of voting, the committee has planned programmes to garner support for Tamang. The members have already sought permission from the Darjeeling municipality to start making announcements over the public address system across the town. “Prashant’s mother will go across Darjeeling in a van, fitted with mikes. The rest of the hills will also do their bits to drum up support for their idol,” said Khambachey. Residents of Toongsoong are already bringing out rallies almost every night.
Kathmandu, June 8: A 22-year-old policeman from Darjeeling, who is one of the contestants in the popular "Indian Idol" show hosted by Sony television channel, has become the new icon for the Nepalese diaspora with Indian viewers of Nepalese origin whipping up a campaign to boost his chances.Prashant Tamang, who comes from the Tungsung village in Darjeeing, has hit the headlines in neighbouring Nepal where hundreds are rooting for him.Kantipur, Nepal's largest circulated newspaper, reported Friday how Indians of Nepali origin have found a new object of pride in Tamang, who despite a difficult youth and having no formal training in music, won praise from the judges of the contest and survived the elimination round."I went home to Darjeeling recently. During my stay, I kept on voting for Tamang through SMS. When our brothers win laurels, it is a matter of pride for all of us," Darjeeling girl Neeruta Singh, one of the most sought-after heroines in Nepal, told Kantipur. The Nepalese daily detailed how Darjeeling's ethnic Nepalese community was charged up to support Tamang.A photograph showed a signature campaign with Tamang's 78-year-old grandmother Sanjeevani Tamang scrawling on the huge banner. Taxis in Darjeeling are carrying photographs of the smiling Tamang, while schools, clubs and even the local police are asking people to support the Buddhist singer, the report said.A banner put up by Darjeeling Police said, "Prashant Tamang, the first ethnic Nepali Indian to have gone past the elimination round is our prestige." After his father Madan Tamang died in an accident, Tamang, then just a teenager, was offered a job by the police force for which his father worked. He joined the force in 2002 and found an outlet for his singing dreams by joining the police band. Currently, Prashant is stationed in Kolkata. Ethnic Nepalese are also proud of Udit Narayan Jha, the golden-voiced boy from Nepal's border area, who became a singing sensation in India's multi-billion rupees Bollywood film industry.Jha, who is one of the judges of the contest, spoke to Tamang in Nepali when he learnt where the contestant's home was and that he spoke Nepali at home - another matter of pride for the ethnic Nepali diaspora. Indian idol is one of the most watched programmes in Nepal and when Abhijit Sawant, the first Idol, came to sing in Nepal, his concerts were packed. This year, the contest for which auditions were also held in London and Dubai saw participants from cities other than the major metros making a mark for first time. Besides aspirants from Nagaland and Assam, there was also a contestant of Chinese descent, who was praised for his singing talent and personality.
GANGTOK, June 7: Never before did a policeman arrest so many people at one go. He is doing it but, arresting their imagination by the thousands. He is Prashant Tamang, a policeman by profession and an Indian Idol aspirant by choice.Prashant, young, savvy and talented is a Darjeeling born boy. He has climbed several notches in the programme reaching a round from where he could well emerge as the Indian Idol. Whether he does or not, he has taken Sikkim by storm and the people here are showing it.They gathered on the streets, on sidewalks and parks today to express solidarity with the performer. “Go ahead, we are with you,” was the collective wish for the potential champ as they one and sundry got busy punching cell phone buttons to cast that one more vote which might help him scrape through to the next round. “He is our man,” claimed a proud DIG Range Mr Akshay Sachdeva today, obviously excited with the achievement of a fellow man in uniform.Celebrities are joining the common man to extend support to Prashant. Take for instance Miss Karishma Pradhan, who recently won a beauty pageant in Kolkata. “I would be happy for Prashant if he wins the title,” she said joining a band of supporters voicing their support.School children, clerks, executives, traders and officials - name them and they were all out on the streets today campaigning for Prashant. There is one grievance among the people though - they are not being able to send as many SMS as they wish to because of a faulty network connection. “I was trying to recharge my mobile to vote Prashant since last night. I went on trying the whole day today but was unsuccessful, which shows how bad cell phone service is here,” complained Mr Yadav Sharma a local, as did many others.Whatever be the outcome, Prashant is already a very popular policeman by now in this region.
Darjeeling, June 9: Mobs from Darjeeling to Kalimpong vandalised and gheraoed offices of mobile service providers today alleging their SMS votes for a local Indian Idol contestant were not being registered.
Prashant Tamang, a police constable in Calcutta, was among the 12 finalists of the popular TV show whose fates were to be decided through all-night voting from 9 pm on Friday till 8 am today.
Hills people alleged their votes for Tamang were not being registered because of network problems, especially with Reliance and BSNL connections, and claimed “sabotage”.
Both companies, however, insisted that the votes were registered, and Tamang indeed made it to the final 10 tonight.
The Sony contest has been known to arouse regional sentiments with a previous edition witnessing charges that viewers from a certain state had skewed the vote.
“After sending an SMS through Reliance we were getting a message saying the code word was not found. This means our votes were not getting through. We believe this is sabotage,” said Pranay Rai, Gorkha National Liberation Front MLA from Darjeeling.
BSNL subscribers such as Bimal Sharma said they were not receiving the delivery status confirming their votes had reached. “For every 20 to 30 text messages, we were getting a delivery status report for one or two. Our money, however, was being deducted.”
This morning, a crowd vandalised a Reliance outlet in Darjeeling and threw out the computers, printer and cell phones. Another mob smashed billboards of service providers across town. BSNL and Reliance offices were gheraoed in Kalimpong, and Kurseong saw street protests.
Shops in Darjeeling town were shut from 11 am but many opened late in the evening.
V. Bhattacharya, SDO (telephones) and Reliance suggested there was a problem with the Sony server. “We forced our way into their server and registered the votes,” a Reliance official said.

Statesman News Service KOLKATA,
June 3: The headquarters of Kolkata Police at Lalbazar and all the police stations in the city have been flooded with posters requesting the cops to vote for one of their colleagues who is participating in the Indian Idol 3. A constable of the seventh battalion of the Kolkata Police, Mr Prasant Tamang, is a vocalist in the city police’ band. He is now in Mumbai to compete in the Indian Idol competition. The 24-year-old youth is a resident of Darjeeling district. Joint commissioner of police (armed police) Mr Zulfikar Hassan said nearly 1,500 posters and a few hoarding had been circulated all around the city by Kolkata Police. The posters have been put up on the walls at the Kolkata Police head quarters, local police stations, bodyguard lines and all other establishments of the city police. Not a single paisa was, however, used from the Kolkata Police funds. The entire money was contributed by their colleagues. “The idea is to increase the chances of the constable who is competing in the Indian Idol. The city police has a 26,000-strong force and if each one of us votes for him through SMS, then he will be in an advantageous position. The rest will depend on his performance”. On Saturday, when Mr Tamang’s performance was aired on a television channel, his colleagues had a gala time watching his performance on a giant screen at the Body Guard lines at Alipore. A senior police officer said: “His performance was shown on a giant screen after a function which was organised for chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhttacharjee to inaugurate the seventh barrack building. Hundreds of policemen had gathered on the spot to cheer for their colleague who is now performing in the Indian Idol”. He also said that Mr Tamang was well-known for his talent among his colleagues but was not getting the encouragement to participate in big competitions. It was after the Indian Idol 2 that he showed interest in participating in the competition and was encouraged by his colleagues. The news soon reached the top brass of Kolkata Police (armed police) who made the necessary arrangements.
Prashant Vs Richa...

well i think..richa is to be blamed for creating this scence...but Prashant Tamang also is not very innocent..did u c d look in his eyes whn she was talking to d other guy n practicing with him...n whn richa was complaining bout him to javed akthar..prashant was coming close to her and hugging her..this is not done..both of them r at fault but more weightage ..RICHA
Prashant Tamang... Obviously. Not only he is a good singer but also he is a Hero in real life. Three cheers for prashant..hip hip hurrayhip hip hurrayhip hip hurray
well guys how can you come to such a conclusion that Prashant is poor and richa is rich? i dont think so, she doesnt even have basic manners, looks like some GAWAR , brought up in some rural corner of INDIA where civilisation is atill in its evolutionary stages!Look at the way she dresses(like a true BEHENJI), look at the way she stands and sing without any expression, no doubt she has good voice but i dont think she can even speak a word of English!(Not that it matters) in no way she looks rich! gimme a breakand by the way this is INDIAN IDOL, a singing talent hunt show, being poor or rich doesnt make any difference whatsoever!
LIFE IS WHAT
I FEEL DAT THE DESERVING PERSON WILL B SELECTED .BUT I THINK DAT RICHA HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR LAST 10 OR 12
Shuv CollegeOver
nahi yaar she is not at all doin right thing. even if selected by d judges to top 28 she is definitely goin to be out in d beginning by public votes. coz i think in public's opinion she don't deserve to b Bharat ki shaan
Princess
richa z doing absolutly wrong coz when finally she went to boys room...then after passing 15min in practice, she moved towards the guy(dont kno his name-roomate of parashant).first she was not going to boys room & then she started to sing with another idol leaving her partner.
@fazijust grow up man he just come and hug her and put his hand on her head as a big bro or may be as a partner and by the way she is just a kid yaar indian idol is full of girls then why he will do this which u thinking its not like that yaar he was just wanna friendly with her so that she could be freely practice with him
Anonymous
yeah exactly! look at her double standards, she was actually trying to insult Prashant with some help from that WEIRD looking BHAIYA, actually she is lucky she dint get someone who would slap her coz of the nuisance that she is, i m sure if it was someone else, she would have been slapped tightly by now
Shuv CollegeOver
pata nahi she have been slapped or not. tv pe toh nahi dikhaya so bata nahi sakte. kya pata edit kar diya ho toh
We are lloking for Idol not only singer..so richa have to improve her attitude...Prashant is the best guy...if he can improve his accent a bit more then he would be in the top 11.
prashant....netime iz bettr dan richa.....i mean richa iz btr at singing....but prashant iz bettr at heart.....so can win trust of his fellow contestants.....
Shadwal...
FRANKLY SPEAKING, I HATE RICHA.SHE IS DOING INJUSTICE TO PRASHANT.THE ATTITUDE SHE SHOWS IS VERY BAD AND WILL LEAD HER TO MANY MANY CONTROVERSIES IF THE INNOCENT PRASHANT GOT DISMISSED B'COZ OF HER.
MrspetloverUS
Prashant Tamang Sipoy is good and Richa better drop her attitude and dont use her classical harkatey where she does not need them. If she keeps up with bad attitude she will be voted out by Indian public
I just saw one episode when she was beign paired up wid that guy and was showing tantrums on going to his room for practice. She did appear to be stuck wid her attitude which she needs to shed before being eliminated.
MrspetloverUS
And tonight's episode she forgets lyrics completely and still makes it to piano round. was happy to see Prashant Tamang Sipoy
sunsha
I need to find out the timing of II3 in DUbai as I have not been following it at all.Even Zee SRGMP I have been missing dur to clash of timings.Somehow,I dont seem to miss either!...any guesses??
Prashant sings well - I commend his patience to deal with Richa. If it was me I wld have gone mad singing with that dumb girl......
may be that poor kudi is just scared of a police men. But i agree, she is dumb no doubt. I admire your wit- prashant. keep doing good.
